Minions: The Rise of Gru - 6.8./10

Jadd J.A.D.D. Jadd

I was dreading this to be completely honest, but when it was over I had a good time with it. It was highly entertaining and enjoyable. The animation was bright and colourful with fun character designs. Steve Carell, Taraji P. Henson, Michelle Yeoh, Pierre Coffin and Alan Arkin were having the time of their lives voicing these characters and it shows when you watch the movie. The movie embraces its seventies setting and takes full advantage of it. Gru and the minions were still endearing and charming. The jokes and gags still kind of work to a point. The whole kung fu sequence was tons of fun and the same thing can be said about the climax. It's also kind of refreshing to have a kid that looks up to supervillains instead of superheroes. The whole franchise has fun with this concept and this movie is no exception. It's also incredibly short and doesn't slow down. It exists to be a good time and that's what I got.

I felt the other members of The Vicious Six were underdeveloped especially with legends voicing them. Such as Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Danny Trejo and Lucy Lawless. RZA was also completely wasted. Michelle Yeoh had a purpose in the movie, but then suddenly she disappears and doesn't come back. The movie had one good and clear story, but then it gets boggled down with four different subplots that were very disjointed, went nowhere and humour didn't work. This was a very short review and the reason is. I thought it was just fine. It's fine to take the kids to or just to kill some time when nothing else is playing. But if you want to drop your kids off at a movie, while you go watch The Black Phone. Then this movie is the perfect time killer.
