Nope - 8.2./10

Jordan Peele is one of my favourite directors, every time I see a new movie from him I get excited. He's clever, visceral, bold and original. A lot of people love M. Night Shyamalan's Signs, but I can't stand it, for me. Nope is what I wanted from Signs. Jordan Peele made a skilfully original movie that combines horror, sci-fi, a western and the meaning of the spectacle and the dangers of what comes of it. Jordan Peele is a master of suspense, he writes and directs everything with consistent flow and intense sequences that left me gasping for my breath. Each character is so fleshed and layered that I could spend time with them without the alien threat surrounding them.

Keke Palmer is great, she's energetic and charming. Every time she's on-screen she lits everything up. Daniel Kaluuya is terrific. His calm demeanour and reactions to the situation surrounding them were perfect. Both Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya had great chemistry together. They were the heart of the movie. Steven Yeun is at his best here, he's showing how versatile he is as an actor. Brandon Perea is excellent, he brings both humour and honesty plays the audience at times. Michael Wincott is fantastic. He chews every scene he's in and doesn't apologize for it. Keith David had a small role in it, but he always makes every moment count.

Hoyte van Hoytema's cinematography is wide and atmospheric. Composer Michael Abels delivers another haunting and yet western score. On a technical level, everything is done so effectively and masterfully. But there's an ape in the movie and the effect was amazing.

As for complaints; Universal Pictures released too many trailers for the movie that revealed too much and ruined the twist at the end. The subplot with Steven Yeun's character was suddenly dropped and didn't pay off that well. The runtime was too long and some rewrites would've helped and been tighter. I do admire how the movie is broken into chapters, but the titles had nothing to do with the chapter. I love these characters but they weren't fully developed and were even emotionless at times. This movie has so much great ambition that I loved to watch, but unfortunately, that was a lot left to be desired.
