This movie was one of the most highly anticipated of the year and lived up to the hype. It has a graphic novel with a Western aesthetic, and Ryan Coogler is one of the best directors in the industry. His visual and storytelling flair is sharp and full of craftsmanship. It has a seventies film vibe to feel with the colour grid and shooting with a 2.76:1 Aspect ratio and IMAX cameras, it perfectly comes together so beautifully. Ryan Coogler is an expert craftsman of filmmaking and storytelling. To me, Ryan Coogler and Jon M. Chu are the best filmmakers working today. The characters are flawed and complicated, yet enduring, and Ryan Coogler's writing immerses you into the characters and their situation, and you root for them.
Michael B. Jordan gives a unique and distinct performance play both twins of Smoke and Stack. He was utterly believable drives home why he is a superb talented actor and movie star. Wunmi Mosaku is incredible as she is the pillar of strength and grace in her character with her soothing presence. Miles Caton makes his acting debut and he is absolutely superb and is the heart of the movie.
Delroy Lindo can do no wrong as brings both gravitas and humour to his role. The supporting cast include Yao, Li Jun Li, Hailee Steinfeld and Omar Benson Miller they are all fantastic and have key and important roles in the story and are fully fleshed with dimension. Jack O'Connell is utterly terrifying and unsettling as the main villain, he carries so much mystery and devilish danger to him.
Ludwig Göransson is one of my favourite composers and is among the greatest movie composers ever. The score is a combination of Western, ambient, soothing Blue's music, goth, and rock, and it melds into a beautiful masterpiece.
Everything on a technical level is perfect; it's a gorgeous and tangible period piece with beautifully crafted, detailed costumes. The only issue I have with the movie is that it introduces some things in the beginning that seem like they could play a big part in the movie, but they never come back around. But everything else about the movie is so technically and tightly done and edited splendidly.
This movie is also homage and tribute to Blues music and the impact of African American culture and how African American culture has contributed to the world. There is a sequence that is so impactful and transcends every generation and it's the most astonishing filmmaking I've seen in a whlie.
Don't watch the second trailer for the movie because it spoils quite a bit of the twist in the movie. This is legitimately scary and intense. There are two end-credit scenes, so stick around for those. This is an absolute crowd-pleaser and a movie that needs to be seen again and again. This movie is the pulse we need right now.
