Squid Game: Season 1 - 9.2./10
I was late to the hype train for this show. For weeks it was number one on Netflix and became a worldwide phenomenon. I'm happy to see Parasite and Squid Game break barriers for foreign movies and shows to get the attention that it deserves from the Hollywood industry. The acting from the entire cast is top-notch. My personal favourites are Lee Jung-jae, Anupam Tripathi, Lee Yoo-mi, and HoYeon Jung. I got attached to them on so many levels and my heart went out to them. In each game, the characters go through is creative but also sadistic. The steaks are high and completely unnerving throughout, there were a lot of twists and surprises I didn't see coming, which affected me because I grew so attached to these characters. The production and sets are stunning because they're playing children's games it's so bright and playful. Which makes it so much more sadistic and dark when the games get life-threatening. The costumes are so simple yet very intimidating, whenever they show up I couldn't help but feel dread. Especially when the games were happening it always left me uneasy. The score by Jung Jae-il is spellbinding and eerie with original and unique themes and music that stick with you for days. The creator of the show Hwang Dong-hyuk took ten years to get this project off the ground it was rejected by companies and actors. Thankfully his project came to life and is now being praised and celebrated for the classic that it is.
As much, as I love this show but it does its flaws. When the characters randomly start speaking English, it was very distracting and quite random. SPOILERS!! SPOILERS!!. I'm talking about The VIPS and the dialogue they were given was bad as well as the actors. The characters of Han Mi-nyeo and Jang Deok-su are great in their roles and their characters are effective and do serve a purpose. But they can also be very over the top and cartoonish at times as well.
