I'm not a fan of Elvis Presley or Baz Luhrmann. To be completely honest this movie didn't do anything for me; Now that being said I do applaud him for being passionate and dedicated to the movies he makes. Baz Luhrmann has a very distinctive and dazzling eye that separates him from other filmmakers. He uses everything in his filmmaking toolbox to deliver a movie that will leave the audience, not only speechless for the visual spectacular on screen, but also emotionally moving in parts. Austin Butler gives an incredible and unrecognisable performance as Elvis Presley. From his voice, and body language, to his charm and magnetic presence. When the movie gets intense and claustrophobic, Baz Luhrmann uses the camera and editing so effectively. I cannot stop praising this movie for its production design, costumes and everything else on a technical level. it's just so captivating and festive to the eye.
Tom Hanks is a great actor, he's a national treasure, but he's wildly miscast here. Everything from the prosthetics and makeup, to his cartoonish accent, he just didn't fit. When there was a serious and emotional scene, he would enter the room and ruin it. This is also a Hollywood biopic so I wouldn't take anything with a grain of salt. My interest was slipping in and out during the movie, it didn't hold my attention long enough and overall I just didn't care. Doing some research on the controversy surrounding Elvis Presley, it's legitimate and deserves to be called out. I didn't feel the runtime for the first two acts, but by the time it reaches the last fifteen minutes, I could feel the length. To be honest, I wouldn't watch it again, it didn't do anything for me. But if you're Elvis Presley or a Baz Luhrmann then you'll love this, but as for me, I would rather watch Moulin Rouge! again.
