I love the blockbusters and independent movies. I love all varieties of movies. This movie is a bold movie that's bizarre yet creative and fuelled with imagination. It goes outside the box and doesn't play it safe. It has emotion, action, bold storytelling and insane visuals are the reasons why I love this movie. The Daniels have taken genres that they love and poured all of it with craftsmanship and passion and all of that is proof on the screen. Michelle Yeoh is incredible, she puts everything into this role as she goes through so many trials and tribulations that not only do you relate to her but understand her. She will also remind you why she's a martial arts legend. Ke Huy Quan is amazing, he brings so much energy and charisma, full of heart and is an absolute badass. He has a scene where he kicks ass and my mouth was on the floor. Jamie Lee Curtis is great, she's more intimidating and threatening than Michael Myers in the new Halloween movies. Stephanie Hsu was excellent and of course, James Hong was great. The action sequences and visual effects are impressive and wild. The framing, editing, staging and choreography it was all done brilliantly. It's a high tribute to Hong Kong martial art movies. The score by Son Lux is outstanding. He used a mixer of pop-rock and electronic and it was melded beautifully. The movie is full of subtlety, you need to look carefully because the things in the background make sense later in the movie. When it comes to an end the emotional payoff is fulfilling and sweet.
As for complaints, it does go on a little too long and it does get overcrowded with the logic the movie sets up. This movie won't be for everyone, it's very weird and out there for casual moviegoers. But it's worth it because we don't have movies like this anymore and if we want more movies like this then we need to support movies like this.
