This was so much better than I ever thought it would be. I love the original it's a classic but it's outdated with one thing in it everyone except for Rita Moreno who is a real Latino actress. All the who was the Puerto Ricans on the Sharks side were wearing brownface and I understand why Latinos were offended by it. The best thing about this remark along with others is that cast real Latino actors and actresses. This is by far and away Steven Spielberg’s best movie in the last two decades. The Adventures of Tintin and Ready Player One were entertaining but he hasn’t made a great movie until now with this movie. He has made a gritty, energetic, engaging and emotionally stirring movie. He didn’t make a shot by shot of the original, he made a movie that is not only spare from the original but made a completely new and different movie for a new generation. I haven’t seen him this passionate and energetic in the last two decades. The music and songs are untouchable but here it’s beautifully updated orchestral music while still being ageless and helps the story and what the characters are feeling. The acting is sensational. Newcomer Rachel Zegler is incredible she brings so much passion and enthusiasm to Maria and her voice is angelic. Ariana DeBose is simply magnificent, she’s charming, charismatic, with layers of depth of emotions and her vocals and singing are glorious. Rita Moreno is marvellous she stole every scene she was in. And her majestic voice still soars and you'll remember why she’s a legend. David Alvarez as Bernardo and Mike Faist as Riff are fantastic as the leaders of the Jets and Sharks they both have more dimension to them than the original. The dance sequences will leave you in awe. The choreography is fast and sharp and editing is kinetic and everything flows so smoothly and naturally that you won’t miss a second of the grandness on the screen. But whenever there is Joy and happiness, there is tension when tension comes up which is most of the time it put me on edge most of the time.
The only problem I have is that Ansel Elgort isn’t the right actor to play Tony. He was flat and monotone. It’s everything from his singing, dialogue, the way he holds himself in a room and his dancing. Everyone is going in circles around him and it shows. So when the tragedy comes in what’s hard and it does but doesn’t because one is giving their all and the other isn’t.
