I had no expectations for this movie and I haven't liked any of the Jurassic sequels, but they do have highlights in them and the same can be said with this movie. By default, this was the best one out of the Jurassic World trilogy. Let me start with the positives because I liked quite a few things. To have the original trio back, Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum were all good and elevated the movie a little. Bryce Dallas Howard is a gifted actress and a fantastic director. She brought her A-game as Claire in this last movie. DeWanda Wise was great as Kayla Watts. She had this Indiana Jones personality, I wanted to spend more with her. The visual effects were first-rate. The CGI worked most of the time, but the practical and animatronics are just outstanding. Some of the action sequences worked it kept energy high and exciting with creative set pieces. And there is some great imagery of the dinosaurs roaming the earth and it looks so imaginative. There was one great scene that involves Claire crawling through the swamp trying to escape a dinosaur, which gets very suspenseful. And that is where the positives end for.
There was so much wasted potential with the dinosaurs taking over the world. The possibilities of how these creatures took over the world were right there. That should've been what the movie should've been all about that, but instead, the movie focused on something that was beyond insane. I can't spoil it but it was head-scratching. The villain in this movie is ridiculous from the motivation which makes no sense to the unintentionally funny freakouts. It was very obvious that this was a last-minute villain. It took me until after the movie to realize how far back the villain goes back and it was pretty pitiful. This movie treats its audience like idiots and talks down to them because it dumps a huge amount of lazy exposition and re-introduces the old characters in the sloppiest way possible.
Isabella Sermon plays Maisie Lockwood. I hope this actress gets to be in better things. Because all of her performance is scoffing and being unbearably unlikeable. Chris Pratt plays the same character again and again. And I'm sick of seeing him play these roles.
Top Gun: Maverick showed what a sequel can be and they should be. And this movie proves what not to do with a sequel. If you want to watch this just wait for it to become available to watch at home. It's not worth watching in the cinemas.
