Lightyear - 6.8./10

I had an absolute blast with this movie. It made me feel like a kid again. This is the second movie this year that made me feel like I can take on the world. With each movie Pixar does, the animation skyrockets and improves with each movie and this is no exception. To the point of being realistic with a vivid and breathable atmosphere. It was very obvious that the filmmakers were influenced by Star Wars, Alien, Aliens and Interstellar. Chris Evans is perfect as Buzz Lightyear, he takes control and dominates the screen. Uzo Aduba is great, she truly is the heart and the emotional anchor of the movie. Keke Palmer is fantastic, she has so much warmth and love to honour her grandmother while discovering who she is. Peter Sohn is incredible and steals the show with his character SOX. He's so endearing that he will win your heart at the end of the movie. Michael Giacchino's score was delightful and fun, along with its action sequences.

The first act was great, however, by the time the second act starts the narrative structure of the story started to suffer and it becomes a standard sci-fi movie. The reveal of Zurg went from interesting to forgettable in a matter of minutes after his introduction. Mo played Taika Waititi and Dale Soules as Darby Steel were just one note and lame comedic relief. The ingredients were there, this could've been an exciting and special movie. But instead, it was just fine. This is supposed to be a time travelling adventure but instead, it's only one planet and that's it. And when it comes to Pixar and a beloved iconic childhood hero, fine doesn't cut. The concept is great but quickly falters as the movie continues. This isn't bad or mediocre like Cars 2, The Good Dinosaur, Onward and Monsters University. But it just simply exists and all the potential and goodwill it promises leaves.
