I’ve said this before on my Facebook and Instagram; that this is the best Batman movie since The Dark Knight. I personally believe that and I will stand by that. Robert Pattinson is great as Bruce Wayne/Batman. His performance gives us a version we've never seen before. Constantly on edge, keeping his emotions bottled up, on the verge of breaking mentally and the death of his parents still lingering. But at the end he fully accepts being the hero Gotham needs and being a symbol. Zoë Kravitz is excellent as Selina Kyle/Catwoman. She gives so much elegance and determination in her performance. Pattinson and Kravitz share fantastic on-screen chemistry that they have is electrifying. Paul Dano is terrific, he gives such terrifying and unsettling characteristics to The Riddler that I’ve never seen before, the things he does are disturbing and twisted. Andy Serkis is stellar I wish we saw more of him. Jeffrey Wright is outstanding as Gordon, his portrayal is the best one yet. He works with Batman and gets more involved with everything than any other portrayal of the character. This is the first time I’ve seen Gordon take charge and be competent. Colin Farrell is fantastic, he brings so much malice and threat in his performance. The make-up and prosthetics on him is amazing, he’s unrecognizable. The action sequences were brilliantly done with high tension and riveting editing that will keep you on the edge of your seat and breathless. Matt Reeves direction is ambitious and with a strong vision and has understanding of this iconic character and the lore with it. The cinematography is nothing short of remarkable. Both Matt Reeves and the cinematographer Greig Fraser create a gritty seventies crime detective noir. Along with graphic novel aesthetic mixed with a David Fincher movie. The score from Michael Giacchino is spectacular. It makes new themes that will stick with you and the rest of the music will give you chills.
I do have quite a few problems with the movie. There are times when the dialogue is just exposition and the relationship between Bruce and Alfred is solid at times. However when Bruce is telling Alfred off, it was random and didn’t have any legs to stand on until later. I wish the story spent more time with them so we could get to the core of their relationship. This movie was different enough from the other Batman movies until an Easter egg that frustrated me because I’ve seen it a million times and now I’m worried that the studio is going to bring the reveal at some point. The Riddler was very effective until the third act when he went full movie villain. I love Batman, he’s one of my favorite superheroes but I’ve seen so many Batman movies that I’m a little burnt out on Batman. Compared to The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, they push that further and got out of it’s confront zone, with characters we’ve never seen before and we’ve grown to love.
