To be completely honest; I wasn't looking forward to this movie. Mostly because I thought the first movie was fine, it was quite mediocre. But when I saw this movie and after I felt the theatre I was soaring, ready to take on the world. Go watch this movie on an IMAX screen or 4DX, it's worth every cent. This movie does what every sequel should be. More mature and advanced the story and characters. But most importantly not to rehash its predecessor. Tom Cruise gives an incredible performance, he brings so much wisdom, bravery, compassion and vulnerability to his role. Val Kilmer has a moving and beautiful role in this movie and I refuse to reveal it. Miles Teller gives a superb performance. The relationship between him and Maverick was a touching story about forgiveness and rebuilding a relationship. The other cast members like Jennifer Connelly, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman and Glen Powell were all so good and each of them had a vital role in the story. Joseph Kosinski directed with care and ambition, he crafted a movie for new generations to come.
Harold Faltermeyer, Lady Gaga, Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe score and song is inspring. It gave me the chills and nail-biting suspense when it needed to be. But it was also triumph and tender when it need to be. Lady Gaga's song 'Hold My Hand' lifted me to the sky and made me feel encouraged not to give up on myself like all of her music does.
Speaking of emotion there is one scene where there was weight and gravitas that almost brought me to tears. The flying and action sequences were truly vast in scope and gripping. Filmmaking alone is an achievement for cinematography, visual effects, editing and sound design. It's all real and in camera, the CGI is there, but it's melded so seamlessly.
My complaints are small. Jennifer Connelly is a first-rate actress, but she is given very little to do. Ed Harris and Jon Hamm are reliable and great actors but they just play the genric, stuck-up authority figures I've seen thousand times in movies. But the writers were very smart not to draw it out or be over the top, it was just the right amount. Other than that, I highly recommend watching this movie on the biggest screen as soon as you can.
