M3gan - 7.9./10

What a great way to start 2023!! This combines horror and satire perfectly. As well as a commentary on bad parenting and the addiction children have to technology. M3gan's physicality is played by Amie Donald. Her robotic and humanized body language is creepy and unnerving along with her dead and unfeeling eyes. M3gan's voice is played by Jenna Davis. Her voice never changes from her monotone and manipulative tone. It's both calming, and friendly and yet also cold and sinister. To top it all off her love and unbreakable dedication to Cady. Even though M3gan does kill, I can't help but sympathise with her and root for her sometimes.

The effects of the doll are outstanding. Using make-up, CGI and two well-crafted animatronic puppets. Allison Williams was excellent as the straight man and her just reactions alone are subtly funny. Violet McGraw is good. She starts sympathetic, but as she grows more of a bond M3gan and becomes more reliant on her. The more she becomes isolated from everyone and even manic. Ronny Chieng is fantastic as a wonderfully mean boss with a dark sense of humour.

The pacing of the movie is inconsistent. Particularly in the beginning and a bit in the middle. The introduction to Gemma (Allison Williams) was disjointed, it felt like a scene was missing. This a silly movie and a satire to take it seriously is a mistake, especially at the climax. It will throw off some people for being over the top.

It didn't for me, I was having too much fun and even on edge a bit. M3gan does have that stock movie villain speech at the end, which we've all heard a million times. Because the actresses and effects were pulling me in. A stinger teases a sequel that will be released in 2025. Honestly, I'm excited to see what else they can do with M3gan.
