Thor: Love and Thunder - 7.0./10

Jadd J.A.D.D. Jadd

The lighting didn't strike twice, unfortunately. It was still action-packed, funny, sweet and emotional. Taika Waititi wonderfully sews his witty and satirical humour while bringing some genuinely heartfelt moments.

Chris Hemsworth is excellent. He nails both the humour and the action. We see Thor still mending after the events of Avengers: Endgame. And wanting to discover who is other than the God of Thunder. Christian Bale is great, he has such a great design and a tragic story. He sinks his teeth into the role. Tessa Thompson is of course, excellent. She carries herself with dignity, grace, authority and full of power. Natalie Portman is at her best. She has a touching character arc. She kills it with the action and has more of a dimension to her character than ever before. Taika Waititi is just delightful as Korg. He brings so much warmth and loyalty. His that friend that you want and he gets a sweet ending to his character. Russell Crowe is having a blast as Zeus. He chews the scenery and steals the movie for a while.

The visuals were full of texture and pop with wonderful imagery. Just so incredibly detailed and rendered. Especially when they get to Gorr's world. It's creepy but creative and beautifully shot. The action sequences are well crafted with fun set pieces. Michael Giacchino's score was electrifying and exciting. The message of the movie hit a nerve with me because I could relate to what Thor was going through.

However, this movie proved that Thor: Ragnarok was lighting in a bottle. Thor: Ragnarok had a three-act structure, a story, character developments and arcs. This movie doesn't have that, it was more joke, joke, a little bit of exposition and plot and then more jokes and gags. It runs out of steam the further it goes on. There's an action sequence that involves children joining the fight, which feels like something out of a Disney channel movie. Christian Bale is great, he's always great, but he was wasted here. He appears in the first act, and comes back towards the end of the second act and into the third.

I wish the Guardians of the Galaxy had more of a role to play. They show up for five minutes and leave, they just didn't have a purpose. I wish Jaimie Alexander had more of a prominent role in the MCU, she shows up for a few cameos and leaves. Which is a shame because she's a very talented actress.

Some pretty important things happen in the movie. And it's barely touched upon. I'm guessing that is due to editing. This is a shame because those scenes would've helped make this movie more cohesive. Some of the humour worked. However, the downside is a lot of it didn't work. Humour is quite subjective for other people and this will divide some fans.
