Turning Red - 9.4./10

Jadd J.A.D.D. Jadd

Not having this movie released in cinemas is a crime. The controversy behind this movie is stupid. All young women go through it. For all those whining trolls, I have this to say; grow up and move on with your lives. Now that is said and done, let's get into the movie. The animation is incredible. The lighting to the rendering of the fur is detailed and done beautifully. The voice cast is outstanding. Newcomer Rosalie Chiang as Meilin "Mei" Lee knocks it out of the park with her performance. Sandra Oh was amazing. Her energy and the volume of her voice were great. Mei Mei's friends were sweet and endearing. They were all wonderfully played by Ava Morse, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Hyein Park. The other standouts are Orion Lee, James Hong, Tristan Allerick Chen and Wai Ching Ho. The story and its themes were bold and cleverly told and original. I love this movie and Soul is getting more diverse with its characters, actors, stories and filmmakers. Writer and director Domee Shi made a great story with unforgettable characters that will strongly resonate with daughters and mothers. Ludwig Göransson's score was excellently done. Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell wrote songs for the boyband 4*Town. And those songs have been in my head ever since.

As for flaws, I have small ones. Two things didn't make sense and were questionable. The rivalry between Mei Mei and her bully Tyler was resolved quickly. This was weird because the last scene they were in together was tense. Other than that it's pretty solid. I can't recommend this movie enough. Soul and Turning Red are the best that Pixar has done in years. I love Toy Story 4 but, when it comes to telling original stories these movies are the crowning achievements.
